Treadmill Desk Update: 2 Years

I guess this will just be a quarterly update, considering how long it has been since the last one.

I have now completed 2 full years of treadmill desk ownership.  Year 2 did not end positively:

  • Hours: 2936
  • Hours/Day: 5.1
  • Steps: 10,355,045
  • Steps/Day: 18,040
  • Calories: 637,291
  • Calories/Day: 1,110
  • Calories/Hr: 216
  • Miles: 3426.5
  • Miles/Day: 6.0

Oh, where to begin, where to begin… Well, I mentioned last time that I would be reducing walking in exchange for swimming.  And for the most part, that has gone well.  Between travel and schedule, I actually haven’t been to the pool for a little while now, but for many weeks I was swimming no less than every day or two.

Then I ran smack into holiday season, with lots of treats, large meals, and reduced willpower. Got lazy with exercise in general, too. Needless to say, I experienced quite the setback, as the graph clearly shows.

The trend since I was quite sick (the low point on the graph) is clearly up, and one thing that corresponds with this time frame is that I have not participated in any weight contests. Not that I was passing up opportunities; the ones I have joined previously simply weren’t available.  A lot of the downward trends in the first 2/3 of this graph correspond to such contests.  Fortunately a new one just started up a couple days ago.  I say fortunately because I clearly have lapsed on my self-motivation for a while, so some outside motivation might do me some good.

I didn’t even match the numbers I had the first year. 300 fewer hours, almost 1 million fewer steps, and over 300 fewer miles. There really isn’t any mystery here. It has been a combination of less exercise and more food. I’m going to have to switch that around in order to get this trend going back in a good direction. Here’s to better results - and discipline - in the new year.

I built a treadmill desk after reading your blog. Sorry to see you are struggling.

You are referring to contests. Have you tried this?

It may be the motivation tool you need right now. I start with The Transformer myself on January 21st, would be nice to have you on board.

Good luck!

I think it's time to recommit yourself to the treadmill desk, if only because you have been on BBC!

I have a 'Sit2Stand' treadmill desk so I can stand when I want and sit when I a want. As a result, even though I have 'Chronic Fatigue Syndrome' and am a semi-shut-in, I can usually get my 10,000 steps a day.

Without the ability to quickly change between sitting and standing, I probably wouldn't bother. Maybe it's something to consider.

This is just a setback. I believe in the treadmill desk lifestyle and you are a great spokesperson.

Keep believing!
